Gardendale's Senior Center:

The 4,653-square foot Senior Center  boasts an array of activities and classes.  There are exercise classes designed for all seniors, no matter how sedentary or mobile they may be.   Bingo is enjoyed Mondays and Thursdays, while local musicians entertain on Tuesdays.  Special speakers and educational programs fill the agenda on Wednesdays, while Fridays are saved for playing competitive games, putting together puzzles, and relaxing and enjoying friends. Membership is free for seniors 60+ and a hot balanced meal is served five days a week.  A $1 donation is expected for the programs they have.  If you are homebound in Gardendale and in need of Meals On Wheels, call 592-0413 to be put on their list.

Several new programs are scheduled to commence in 2007 - - Bunko, Line Dancing, and Chair Aerobics.  Check with Senior Center for schedule.

The center has a covered drop-off entrance and the entire building is handicapped accessible. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 9:00 A.M.-1:30 P.M. If any civic organization would like to meet at the Senior Center, or to make a donation, please call Peggy Clark at 631-7240.    (Updated 1/10/2007)

Progress on Northern Beltline:

According to Mr. Wayne Sullivan, Director of the Jefferson County Roads & Transportation Department, the route currently selected by the Alabama Department of Transportation for the Northern Beltline cuts across U.S. 31 near the Alabama Forestry Commission Office in north Gardendale and continues west across I-65.  It then turns southwesterly and intersects Mt. Olive Road and Newfound Road near Mt. Olive First Baptist Church.  From there, it continues toward Brookside and Graysville with interchanges planned in Gardendale around I-65, U.S. 31 and Newfound Road.  The proposed Trussville-to-Bessemer loop of interstate bypass around Birmingham will also have an additional planned interchange at Corridor X in Graysville.  The Northern Beltline should open up north Jefferson County to commercial development similar to the development along I459 in southern Jefferson County. A price tag of $800 million is anticipated and it will likely be several years before Congress appropriates money to begin work.   A map of the route, including proposed properties to be purchased and houses to be moved, is currently on display in the lobby at the Gardendale Civic Center.    Updated 4/27/2006.

Work Close to Completion on Odum Road Retail Development:

This development is located just south of the existing Wal-Mart store and is easily visible from I-65.  The new Wal-Mart SuperCenter, with over 204,000 square feet of shopping space enjoyed their Grand Opening on May 21, 2003.  Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q opened for business on October 30, 2003 and Fire Mountain Restaurant opened on November 10, 2004.  Many other new businesses are locating in the retail spaces across the street, including  Interior Accents which celebrated their Grand Opening on May 27, 2005.

Odum Road has been relocated, straightened and widened to five lanes in conjunction with the new development.  The "new and improved" five-lane portion of Odum Road begins at the existing Fieldstown Road intersection and runs south for approximately a half mile at which point it tapers down to two lanes and joins the existing Odum Road just south of Bailey Drive.  Odum Road runs through the middle of the new complex with stores on both sides of the road.  Improvements have been made to Odum Road by the City to handle the increase in vehicular traffic, as well as improve the road's driving conditions for everyday through traffic.
